The former Mellon Bank Building is a distinctive feature of the Penn/Centre Corridor in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood. For over 50 years, it has visually anchored the intersection. The building serves as a built record of the skill, originality, and distinctive design aesthetic of Pittsburgh’s midcentury modern architectural design.
This significant structure is now threatened with demolition, as the owner plans to clear the site to make way for a new Citizens Bank branch, entirely generic in its design and lacking consideration for the neighborhood context.
